Duties and VAT are paid by the recipient when the goods arrive. In the EU and the UK they are calculated on the goods plus freight (CIF value); in the USA, Canada and Australia duty is calculated on the value of the goods. DHL and FedEx deliver to your door in your own name. The courier clears customs for you and bills the duty and VAT, usually with a small handling fee.
Customs clearance at the port is done by a local agent. Importing by sea as a private person can be difficult; a company name as the recipient makes it smoother. Tell us when you ask for a quote.
EU and UK: igusa and rice-straw cores are accepted. USA: a straw core needs a USDA APHIS import permit; fiberboard cores need none. Australia and some other countries do not accept straw, so we use fiberboard.
6 mats ship in 3 cartons of about 101 × 194 cm, 101 kg in total. Check doors, stairs and lifts, and have two people ready to unload.

Since we ship internationally, we cannot measure your room in person. However, our master craftsmen use a meticulous calculation method to guarantee that your tatami will fit perfectly without any installation issues.

A customer in Finland sent us photos of their new tatami room. On the way, the outer box was badly damaged in transit — but the tatami inside arrived without a mark.
Every mat is wrapped in waterproof paper and surrounded by 9–10 layers of export-grade double-wall corrugated board. In this shipment the outer carton was punctured and several layers were torn open — the layers absorbed the impact and the tatami itself was untouched.

We have shipped tatami from Tokyo to 72+ countries since 2000. Private customers receive their tatami by air (FedEx to the USA, DHL to other countries). Company importers can also choose sea freight to their nearest port.
See our export recordsIt depends on your country. EU: no special permit is needed. USA: the importer must obtain an import permit from the USDA before the tatami is shipped; we will share the product details you need for the application. Australia, Thailand, China and some other countries do not accept rice straw, so we use fiberboard or foam cores instead.

Ask us about rice-straw tatamiYes. Tatami mats can be made to measure in millimeter increments, and each mat can have a different size when the room requires it.
Depending on the material and core, tatami thickness can be selected for different room conditions, floor heights, and uses.
Vacuum along the grain, avoid wet mopping, blot spills instead of rubbing, and keep good ventilation. Natural Igusa needs balanced humidity.
