Our Story

A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Innovation

Since our establishment in 1933, Morita Tatami Shop has been preserving the soul of Japanese living from our workshop in Tokyo. For four generations, we have combined traditional techniques with a global vision to bring the comfort and culture of Tatami to the world.

The First Generation: Resilience (1920s – )

Our founder, Kamezou Morita, was a craftsman of unwavering dedication. Even during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, he remained at his post, responding to the constant demand for repairs. During World War II, while many evacuated Tokyo, Kamezou stayed in the city, ensuring that the craft of Tatami survived the most difficult times in Japanese history.

This precious photo shows the first generation, Kamezou, holding the third generation, Takashi.

The Second Generation: Foundation (1933 – )

Seiichi Morita

Seiichi Morita, the son of Kamezou, took over the shop in the 1960s. We have established 1933—the year of Seiichi's birth—as our official founding year, honoring the generation that built our business foundation. During Japan's period of rapid economic growth, Seiichi devoted himself to meeting the rising demand for quality tatami. His tireless work laid the robust foundation of the Morita Tatami brand we know today.

The Third Generation: Global Innovation (1996 – Present)

Takashi Morita, the current owner, brought a unique perspective to the craft. A passionate French horn player from youth, his love for music taught him the harmony and precision required in artistic creation.

In 1996, Takashi launched our first website, pioneering the international export of Tatami. Since then, he has led prestigious global projects that have brought the beauty of Tatami to the world's most prominent stages.

Our Ultimate Mission

"Our dream is twofold: to ensure the absolute satisfaction of every customer we serve, and to deliver the comfort of Tatami to refugee camps worldwide."

While this humanitarian project, "TATAMI for PEACE," is a journey in progress, it remains the ultimate goal that inspires our daily work. We believe that the simple comfort of lying on a tatami mat can bring a moment of peace to anyone, anywhere.
