Making tatami by hand in Tokyo since 1933, for homes in Japan and around the world.
"Tatami Mats: A Japanese home-grown tradition."
Read the feature on CBS NewsMorita Tatami has worked in Arakawa, Tokyo, for over ninety years. To us, a tatami mat is more than flooring: it is a natural, comfortable place to sit, rest and sleep, in a Japanese room or a modern home.
Our work has been featured by CBS News, and our handmade mats have been shipped to more than 72 countries.
Founded as a tatami workshop in Arakawa, Tokyo. For generations we have made and repaired tatami for local homes, shrines and temples.
Our first export, to Austria, started our overseas work. Since then we have learned the plant quarantine rules of many countries and prepare origin declarations for trade agreements such as the Japan-EU EPA and CPTPP, so that our customers can import with lower or zero duty.
Today we ship made-to-measure tatami to customers in 72 countries. Alongside traditional natural rush grass we offer Washi paper and resin surfaces and lightweight modern cores, and we ship directly from our Tokyo workshop to your door.
Natural rush grass absorbs moisture from the air and releases it again, helping to even out humidity in the room.
Natural rush grass has the scent of dry grass, with a hint of vanilla (vanillin) that many people find calming.
The smooth woven surface is easy to vacuum and wipe, so a tatami floor stays clean with little effort.
Lay out a futon at night and the living area becomes a bedroom. Mats can be rearranged as your needs change.
